Peter I. Crawford (Chair) - Biography

Peter I. Crawford (born Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK, 1955) holds a Danish mag.art. degree (old system, i.e. Ph.d equivalent) in social anthropology from Aarhus University (1985). He has been an active member of the board of the Nordic Anthropological Film Association (NAFA) since the late 1970s. He has written extensively on visual anthropology and ethnographic film-making. He is a former lecturer of the Granada Centre for Visual Anthropology (University of Manchester) and has wide experience in teaching the subject both theoretically and practically. He is currently Associate Professor II at the Visual Anthropology Programme at the University of Tromsø, Norway. Together with Dr. Jens Pinholt of Aarhus University he has led the Reef Islands Ethnographic Film Project (Solomon Islands) since 1994 and is now, together with co-director and editor, Rolf Scott (SOT Film, Bergen), producing a number of ethnographic films based on material recorded in 1994, 1996, 2000 and 2005. Otherwise Peter I. Crawford mainly works as a publisher/editor and as a socio-economic consultant on development issues. His publishing company, Intervention Press, has published numerous books on anthropology and visual anthropology, the most recent being Reflecting Visual Ethnography (2006, edited together with Metje Postma).
